Irlande 1920. Des paysans s’unissent pour former une armée de volontaires contre les redoutables Black and Tans, troupes anglaises envoyées par bateaux entiers pour mater les vélléités d’indépendance du peuple irlandais. |

Black and Tans : Face aux démissions et à la diminution de nouvelles recrues dans la Royal Irish Constabulary, et aux besoins croissants de troupes pour lutter contre l’Armée Républicaine Irlandaise, le gouvernement britannique décide de former et de recruter dès le début de 1920, deux troupes auxiliaires, les Black and Tans » et les « Auxies ».
« Black and Tans » est le nom donné aux troupes suppléantes de la RIC, recrutées parmi les anciens combattants britanniques démobilisés après la Première Guerre Mondiale, mais aussi dans les prisons civiles et les bagnes militaires. Ce nom (« Black and Tans » signifiant « Noir et Fauve ») est celui d’une race célèbre de chiens de Limerick et fait référence à l’uniforme des soldats : les Black and Tans allient l’uniforme kaki de l’armée et celui vert sombre de la police.
« Auxies » est le nom donné aux membres de la Division Auxiliaire de la RIC. C’est un corps d’élite composé d’anciens officiers britanniques, considérés comme les meilleurs combattants.
Les Black and Tans et les Auxies patrouillent en automitrailleuses. Ils se comportent comme une armée d’occupation et développent très rapidement des méthodes expéditives d’une rare brutalité qui scandalisent la population, puis l’opinion mondiale : violences aveugles sur la population, représailles et contre-représailles, assassinats sommaires, incendies de maisons, de locaux commerciaux, de fermes, etc. Ils ont également saccagé, voire rasé, de nombreux villages et villes, massacrant une partie des habitants comme à Balbriggan (village sur la côte Est, au nord de Dublin, une nuit de septembre 1920) et Cork (la nuit du 11 septembre 1920).
Le comportement et les atrocités commises des Auxiliaires et des Black and Tans aida beaucoup au retournement de la population contre la couronne britannique.
